Summer Reading @ Your Library

Summer Reading kicks off June 7, 2010, at all library locations!  Join us for a SPLASHING good time!  Programs for children, teens, and adults.  A full schedule of events can be found on the website calendar.

Butterfly Project at Perry County District Library

To kick off National Library Week (April 12-17), we invite you and your entire family to take part in an inspirational project...the Butterfly Project.  In conjunction with National Poetry Month and the National Butterfly Project organized by the Holocaust Museum of Houston, the library staff will introduce participants to this effort to remember the innocent children who perished in the Holocaust.  The program is scheduled for Monday, April 12 at 5:30 at the New Lexington Library.

Participants will have the opportunity to create their own butterflies inspired by poetry from the book, I never saw another butterfly. These butterflies will then go on display in the Teen Room of the library before being shipped to Houston, Texas as part of the Butterfly Project.  With a goal of collecting 1.5 million hand-made butterflies to represent the lives lost, the Holocaust Museum will create an exhibition scheduled for Spring 2013.  The butterflies sent from Perry County will become part of this monumental exhibition.  A follow-up program will be held on Monday, April 26, to discuss the Holocaust, the poems written by children who were victims of this tragic event in history, and the fate of those who wrote the verses included in the book I never saw another butterfly.

For more information, contact the library at 740-342-4194.

ALA/Woman's Day Magazine Initiative

Libraries have until May 9 to promote Woman's Day magazine's newest initiative, "Why the library is important to my community."  The American Library Association and Woman's Day are looking for stories that showcase the importance and value of libraries within the communities they serve.  Women ages 18 and up are invited to send their stories in 700 words or less to womansday@ala.org.  Up to four stories will be profiled in the March 2011 issue of the magazines or at www.womansday.com.

Help in Tough Times

The State Library of Ohio has created a list of online resources to assist individuals in dealing with the issues associated with the challenging economic climate in which we find ourselves.  This site, which you can access from the red, white, and blue "Find Help in Tough Times" button on the right-hand side of the page, provides useful information concerning housing, parenting, employment, financial assistance, help for senior citizens, and health and wellness.

Staff at PCDL have also created a Job & Career Information page that provides you with access to job listings and assistance with a more local/regional focus.  You will also find many books, fliers, pamphlets, and other information concerning employment and education at the New Lexington Library's Career & Education Center.  We hope that all of these efforts communicate that libraries are here to help.
